Angioplasty is the mechanical widening of a narrowed or totally-obstructed blood vessel. This image shows various stages of this process. A balloon catheter is moved into or near the blockage. The balloon is inflated. In some cases, a device called a stent is also placed at the site of narrowing or blockage in order to keep the artery open.
